Biographie

Kristin was born in Iceland 1973, she has lived in Denmark since 1979 with a period back in Iceland 2008-2020. 2008 she was hired to create an intercultural field for Reykjavik City Library. The intercultural programs have been seen as groundbreaking, also for other cultural institutions, when it comes to create participatory cultural platforms and promote the richness of cultural and linguistic diversity in society. Kristin is a co writer of the publication In search of a true inclusion - projects and practice on cultural diversity in the arts and culture sector in the Nordic region. See p. 32-33, 42-43 and 52 for an overview of the projects from Iceland.

Now she is self employed within the field of culture and education with the project “The Flying Carpet cultural encounters”, workshops, lectures and consulting.

Résumé

The Reykjavik City Library began its intercultural activities as pilot projects by hiring Kristin R. Vilhjalmsdottir as intercultural project manager in 2008. The projects are now all an integrated part of the cultural, social and educational landscape of Reykjavik, and have also been introduced to other parts of Iceland as well as other countries. An important outcome/result of this work was the intercultural policy, Roots and Wings, lead by Kristín for The Reykjavik Department of Culture end of 2017.

Everyone has a story of their own, no matter where they come from. In an intercultural society it is up to all of us to weave these stories together and create new ones - together. The main idea behind the intercultural programs lead by Reykjavik City Library is that individuals or groups should be seen in a wide context, rather than as an “icon” for one nationality or country. The work is based on an interdisciplinary collaboration with a wide range of people and partners across society such as social service centres, schools, cultural and educational institutions, NGOs, artists and individuals from all over the world living in Reykjavík.

In the talk Kristin will present examples of activities that she has developed. The emphasis will be on “The Flying Carpet” Cultural Encounters in schools and kindergartens in Iceland and Denmark and “The Women’s Story Circle", a forum for women living in Iceland encountering each other through artistic and social programs and the linguistic platform for university students, Café Lingua - living languages”.

Also there will be some activities during the talk.
