Still a monolingual norm? Challenged language norms and ideologies in the Norwegian educational context

Norway is known for having a relatively homogeneous population and one common national language (Norwegian). However, there have always been minority populations and different language groups in the Norwegian society. With the recent immigration, especially after the 1980s and beyond, the linguistic diversity has increased even further. Today, Norwegian is still the dominant language, but there are several languages ​​and language varieties with different status. Consequently, fundamental questions are raised about whose language norms are valued in society in general, and in particular within education.

In this presentation, I give an overview of the language situation in Norway, both historical and current, before I discuss how the development influences educational and language policy matters.
